Routines are a way for the end user to configure voice commands on a Google Home.

Routines have now been brought to Australia. They function identically to Shortcuts except for 6 dedicated actions:

  • Good Morning
  • Bedtime
  • Leaving Home
  • I'm Home
  • Commuting to Work
  • Commuting Home

You have the ability to set phone actions, cause Google to give you information, play music and or interact with smart home entities.

Other routines are the way that Google Home users can define actions.

To add a shortcut press the blue plus in the bottom right hand of the screen

The add shortcut option has 2 fields; "when I say" and "Google Assistant should do".

When I say allows you to put in up to 5 different commands, for ease of use you should use the microphone to put the command in. This makes sure what you intend to say is what is heard.

Google Assistant Should do is the command that you want to have happen.

This creates a simple substitution. If we configured a shortcut that has the following:

When I say:

  1. Smart Voice is great
  2. I like Voice Control
  3. Show me the light

Google Assistant should do:

         Turn on bedroom lights

When we say "OK Google, I like Voice Control" the Google Home will respond with "OK turning on 3 Lights"
